ResearchSMA costume

Running 26.2 miles is no small feat. Doing it in a brand-new charity mascot costume? That’s a whole different level of dedication – and a perfect reflection of the passion that drives our trustees.

This year, two of our incredible trustees, Dave and George, took on the Brighton Marathon in unforgettable style. Not only did they commit to months of training and preparation, but they also chose to debut our brand-new charity mascot on one of the biggest stages possible. The result? A day full of energy, laughter, and more than a few double-takes from fellow runners and spectators alike.

From the very start line, they stood out. Clad in the vibrant blue and green mascot costume, they brought smiles to faces all along the route. Children waved excitedly, supporters cheered even louder, and countless runners stopped to snap photos or offer words of encouragement. It wasn’t just a race—it became a moving celebration of our cause. Raising awareness of spinal muscular atrophy, and funds for research to improve the lives of those affected by the condition.

Crossing the finish line was an emotional moment. After 6 hours on the course, cheered on by supporters and driven by purpose, they completed the marathon with resilience and pride. And while the costume may have made things harder, it also made the achievement all the more memorable.

We couldn’t be more grateful for their commitment, creativity, and willingness to go the extra mile – quite literally. Their run has already helped raise vital funds and awareness, ahead of the charity’s big event in June – 100 people walking 100 miles of the Dales Way in Yorkshire.

To our two marathon-running mascots: thank you for embodying the heart of our charity in every step. We’re so proud of you.
